2nd Annual Global Africa Symposium
“So don't care where you come from, ………. you're an African. No matter your nationality, you have the identity of an African.”
- PETER TOSH -
(A.K.A. Winston Hubert McIntosh - Jamaican Reggae Musician)
Background
Global Africa represents the dynamic interconnectedness between Africa, its diaspora, and the broader global community. It underscores Africa’s growing influence in international trade, innovation, culture, and diplomacy, while celebrating the vital contributions of the African diaspora to global development and cultural exchange.
This vision seeks to position Africa and its diaspora as central actors in the global economy. By fostering cross-continent collaboration, investment, and trade, the Global Africa initiative aims to unlock Africa’s vast economic potential and deepen its ties with diaspora communities worldwide. A key driver of this movement is the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), which has played a pivotal role in promoting trade, investment, and economic cooperation between Africa and its global partners.
From Pan-Africanism to Global Africa: A Continuum of Unity and Influence
The evolution from Pan-Africanism to the African Renaissance, and now to Global Africa, reflects a continuum of unity, resilience, and global engagement. From the intellectual activism of 19th-century Pan-Africanists to President Thabo Mbeki’s call for an African Renaissance, the movement continually adapts to political, economic, and cultural shifts.
The African Renaissance reimagined Pan-Africanism for the postcolonial era, emphasizing cultural pride, economic empowerment, and political transformation. Global Africa builds on this legacy, recognizing Africa’s global reach—from arts and innovation to geopolitics and trade. This modern phase calls for stronger transnational ties, leveraging Africa’s global presence, and ensuring the continent’s central role in shaping the 21st-century world order. At its core, Global Africa is driven by a shared identity, collective purpose, and the enduring spirit of unity and self-determination.
Afreximbank’s Role in Advancing Global Africa
Afreximbank has been instrumental in convening the Africa-Caribbean Trade and Investment Forum (ACTIF), a high-level forum that brings together heads of state, policymakers, business leaders, and investors to advance intra-African trade and expand Africa’s global economic footprint. Key milestones include:
ACTIF2022 – Bridgetown, Barbados (Sept 1–3, 2022): The inaugural AfriCaribbean Trade and Investment Forum marked a historic step in strengthening economic ties between Africa and the Caribbean, co-hosted with the Government of Barbados and CARICOM.
ACTIF2023 – Georgetown, Guyana (Oct 30–31, 2023): Themed “Creating a Shared Prosperous Future,” this second forum, built on the success of ACTIF2022, deepened commercial collaboration between the Caribbean and Africa.
ACTIF2024 & Afreximbank Annual Meetings – Nassau, Bahamas (June 11–14, 2024): This joint event continued to advance economic cooperation and strategic partnerships.
Launch of the Afreximbank Africa Diaspora Center – New York (June 2024): In partnership with The Africa Center, this initiative established a hub for diaspora engagement, investment facilitation, and knowledge exchange.
ACTIF2025 – St. George’s, Grenada (July 28–29, 2025): The fourth annual forum emphasized trade expansion, market discovery, and stronger Afro-Caribbean partnerships.
